Advantages
- lots of data that is used within an organisation can be quickly identified
- data flows within an organisation can be established

Disadvantages
- on its own, document analysis will not show all the data that is used within an organisation
- it only shows data that is used ‘formally’ – any data that is used verbally will not be seen
- often an organisation can have standard documents such as purchase orders but the people within the organisation do not use the documents and so an incorrect picture of the current system can be imagined
