Advantages and disadvantages of surface water supply

Advantages

Easy to abstract water by direct pumping
Water can be treated after use and put back into a river
Dams and reservoirs can be used for hydroelectric power
Reservoirs can be used for recreation

Disadvantages

Water will need treatment
Seasonal
Construction of expensive and environmentally damaging dams, may trigger earthquakes
Flooding of land for reservoirs
Reservoirs will eventually silt up
Requires sufficient rainfall and large river catchment.

Evaluation

Renewable as there always is precipitation however countries with hot arid climates don't have access to this water, can lead to flooding in developing areas which can lead to loss of life.
