Abraham Lincoln advantages and disadvantages

Advantages

  • Managed his secretaries well + delegate political responsibility = good working relationships and gained support
  • Managed to keep border slave states in union e.g. Maryland surrounded Washington = good tactical skills?
  • Made the Emancipation Proclamation September 1862: stated any slaves in territory conquered by union forces after 1st Jan 1863 = free. Gave high morale and prevented foreign support for CSA
  • Made inspirational speeches like The Gettysburg address = boosted morale
  • Learnt from mistakes: gave overall command of union forces to Grant = won war

Disadvantages

  • Constantly changed military commanders due to military failures
  • Some thought that he abused his power, Habeas corpus: anyone could be imprisoned by military authorities
  • During anti-draft riots New York 1863 Lincoln sent troops to restores order = opened fire on protestors (seen as the only way to restore order is to kill?)
  • Victory of Presidential election 1864 due to the March through Georgia

Evaluation

Overall Lincoln is considered as a great president and war leader, however Davis had a harder job in the newly formed CSA. Even though Lincoln had many advantages he did effectively lead the union to victory due to his learnt mistakes and appointment of Grant. If he had not done this the union may not have won. However the Union victory is a combination of factors one of which is resources; considered to be the most important.
