      • US had sent the 7th fleet to Taiwan
      • MacArthur had defied orders that he shouldn't sent troops to the Yalu River
      • MacArthur publicly declared his support for Jiang and his opposition to Communist China
    • Reasons other than security
      • When Communist fought Nationalists, North Korea had sent 1000s of troops
        • Mao felt obliged to help North Korea in return
      • Stalin had encouraged Mao as he knew a Sino-American conflict would help strengthen his position in relation to both of them
        • China would rely on Soviet financial and material aid, China & US would be weakened by the conflic
      • China believed they were a superior power to which others had to defer
