      • Strongest and deadliest recorded tropical storm in Philippine modern history
      • Originated as a low-pressure system
        • Several hundred kms southeast of the Federated States of Micronesia on 2 November 2013 and then moved westwards
      • Warnings issued in the Visayas islands
        • Police officers and military personnel were deployed in preparation
      • The typhoon hit landfall in the Philippines on 7 November, with winds of 315km/h, heavy rainfall and a storm surge with waves 5.2m high
      • Many people stayed in their homes rather than evacuating
        • The 544,000 who did evacuate were caught in evacuation shelters which became death traps due to severe flooding
      • Many of the emergency response teams who would have coordinated and supported the relief were victims themselves
    • Impacts
      • In the Philippines, 6300 fatalities were confimed
        • 5877 in the Eastern Visayas
      • Over 22,000 reported missing
      • Tacloban City was badly hit
        • Cars piled up
        • Trees blown over
        • Buildings destroyed
      • Tacloban airport flooded
      • International aid was flown into local airports, however much of it stayed there as roads remained closed
      • Lack of sanitation led to higher levels of pollution
      • Oil and sewage leaks into the local ecosystem
      • Between 50,000 and 120,000 tonnes of sugar may have been lost
    • Responses
      • The UN released US $25 million in emergency funds and also issued an appeal for US $300 million
      • 25 humanitarian groups including international response teams and NGOs, delivered basic food

        • Cooking oil
        • There is criticism that many victims struggled to access aid and £1 million worth of food packs were wasted due to improper storage
      • Grants were made for local fishing businesses to buy new boats
      • Save the children helped build tent schools to educate children
      • Oxfam provided rice seeds for farmers
      • 'cash for work' schemes were put in place to help rebuild homes and cities
