  • Types of Experiments
    • Laboratory Experiments
      • Conducted in highly controlled environment
      • Strengths
        • High control over extraneous variables
          • Any effect on the DV is the result of IV
        • Replication is more possible
          • Results therefore valid
      • Limitations
        • Can't be generalised
          • Low external validity
        • Demand Characteristic
    • Field Experiments
      • IV manipulated in a natural and everyday setting
      • Strengths
        • Experiments more realistic
          • High external validity
      • Limitations
        • Lack of control over extraneous variables
          • Cause and Effects harder to establish
        • Precise replication often not possible
        • Unethical
          • Lacks Informed Consent
          • Invasion of privacy
    • Natural Experiments
      • Researcher takes advantage of a pre-existing IV
      • Strengths
        • Provide opportunites for research that may not be available for ethical or practical reasons
        • High external validity
      • Limitation
        • Naturally occuring event rare
          • Reduces opportunities for research
          • Hard to generalise
        • Hard to be sure if IV affects the DV
    • Quasi Experiements
      • Have an IV based on a difference e.g. age, gender
      • Strengths
        • High Control over extraneous variables
          • Any effect on the DV is the result of the IV
        • Replication is more possible
          • Results more valid
      • Limitations
        • Can't randomly allocate participants to conditions
          • May be confounding variables
