  • Transport In and Out of Cells
    • Diffusion
      • Movement of particles from a high concentration to a low concentration
      • Examples of diffusion in living organisms
        • Oxygen and carbon dioxide during gas exchange in lungs, gills and plant leaves
        • Urea diffuses from the cells into the blood plasma for excretion by the kidney
        • Digested food molecules from the small intestine diffuse into the blood
      • Factors affecting diffusion
        • Difference in concentration gradients
        • Temperature
        • The surface area of the membrane
        • A single celled organism has a large surface area to volume ratio
          • This allows enough molecules to diffuse into and out of the cell to meet the needs of the organism
    • Osmosis
      • Diffusion of water molecules from a low to a high concentration through a partially permeable membrane
    • Active Transport
      • Moves substances against a concentration gradient from a low to a high concentration
        • This requires energy from respiration
      • Allows mineral ions to be absorbed into plant root hairs
      • Allows sugar molecules to be absorbed in the gut into the blood
