- Too much extracted can leave not enough left to provide a reliable supply
- Pollution
- Nitrates, pesticides and microbes from agricultural run-off and sewage
- Hydrocarbons and solvents from petrol stations/ factories
- Toxic fluids from landfill sites
- Acid mine drainage water containing toxic metals such as lead from abandoned mines
- Once polluted it can be difficut to clean with unconfined aquifers more at risk than confined
- Over- pumping
