  • The Role of the Church
    • The Church - A called out assembly - The Ancient Greek word for church was 'ekklesia' which literally means a 'called out assembly'
    • Unity - Church is a spiritual society, which replaces Israel as the people of God in the world. All Christians are made one in Christ. Church is the repository of true Christian teaching.
      • The Church gathers the faithful, throughout the world, together, in order to enable them to grow in faith and holiness. Alister McGrath
    • The idea that there is one universal Church is known as Catholocity. This basically means universal.
    • Rome - The Churches would appoint leaders Bishop and the Bishop of Rome started to take a position of oversight for the whole Church.
      • The Bishop of Rome was informally referred as 'Papa' Latin for father which later became 'Pope
      • St Peter was killed in Rome, so the Bishop of Rome has been seen as a successor to Peter.
        • This did start to anger people from other cities as the idea of Rome being the centre for the church and the Pope being a successor of Peter is based on nothing.
    • Apostolicity - When Christianity first started, it was seen to be sect of Judaism - you would have to be a Jewish to be a part of Church.
      • However both Peter and Paul started to teach that this was not the case "there is neither Jew nor gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male or female, you all are one in Christ Jesus" Galatians 3:28
        • People don't need Jewish laws to be a part of Church. Only faith in Jesus is required. This following continuation of teachings by Peter and Paul and other apostles give Church "apostolicity"
    • For Cyprian of Carthage unity and universalness were the most important aspects of the Church.
      • If you were not united with the Church you were not part of the body of Christ. Cyprian wrote and taught any type of schism was totally unjustified.
        • For Luther, it was all part of the Bible as the 'Word of God'. He wrote "where the word is, there is faith, where faith is, there is the true church".
          • Luther stated that anything not in the Bible was false.
            • Protestants continue to believe in universalism but only in terms of everyone believing in the same book, thus the same God.
