    • The Mormons also travelled west
      • Faith was started by Joseph Smith, who claimed to see a vision of an angel called Moroni in 1823
      • Moroni told Joseph to find some engraved gold plates hidden on a hillside
      • Smith translated these engraved plates and publish the translations in 'The book of Mormons ' in 1830
      • It told how Jesus had visited America after the Resurrection, and also how three of the lost tribes of Israel had come to America, from which the Indians were descended
    • Persecuted for their religion
      • Polygamy was seen as scandalous, many thought it was as bad as slavery
      • Their efforts to convert people raised fears of rapid expansion and annoyed non-converts
      • Claimed to be the chosen ones of God
    • They were driven out of many places
      • First settled in Kirtland Ohio, 1831-1837
        • Violence including J.Smith being tarred and feathered (1832)
        • First temple built here in 1833
        • Mormon bank collapsed in 1837 and were driven out to Missouri
      • In Missouri the Mormons' anti slavery stance annoyed slave owners
        • The Danites were suspected of plotting with Indians
          • Many of the leaders were arrested- but Brigham Young emerged to lead the Mormons to Illinois
      • Nauvoo, Illinois- A charter, given by the governor, allowed Mormons an army and laws
        • Smith declared his candidacy for president
        • In June 1844, he was killed in jail by an angry mob
        • Some factions left the Mormons, but 15000 remained when Brigham Young took over
