- In 1929 prices for agricultural goods were low and because of over production prices fell more.
- In 1932 Americans farmers only earned $2 billion collectively compared to $6 billion in 1929
- Effects
- Low mages meant farmers couldn't pay their mortgages so they lost their land
- Some farmers said they would steal food from stores if they weren't given it for free
- Farmers that had lost their farms and that were put on auction protested by forcing the auctioners to sell them at low prices
- Migration
- In the 1930s 2million people moved from rural to urban areas. But cities had high levels of unemployment
- Between 1930-35 around a million people migrated to California
- Migrants were called Oakies and worked for nearly nothing & suffered the worst conditions
- Drought/ dust bowl
- Farmers thought they could make more money buy farming more crops and getting more livestock but they couldnt do this because of the dust bowl
- In April 1933 179 dust storms were recorded. 38 of these were black blizzards
- These left the land poor for farming and livestock, farms failed and left families with no income
- There was a massive drought affecting Eastern USA
- The drought affected 17 million Americans
- The drought made the land so dry that it created dust storms
