    • Opposition to Abolition in Britain
      • Abolitionists first began the fight to end slavery in the 18th century but they faced a lot of opposition.
      • Many people opposed abolition because they were benefitting from slavery.
      • Liverpool dock workers were dependent on slavery for their jobs.
      • Factory owners depended on the raw materials, such as cotton, and being able to ship their goods to the Carribean.
      • The Most prominent anti-campaigners were Thomas Clarkson, Granville Sharp, William Wilberforce and Olaudah Equiano.
    • Thomas Clarkson
      • Won a prize for an essay he wrote about the horrors of slavery in 1786
      • Devoted over 60 years of his life campaigning to end slavery
      • Founded the Committee for the Abolition of African Slavery with Granville Sharp
      • Persuaded MP William Wilberforce to bring up the abolition of slavery in Parliament.
    • Granville Sharp
      • Helped achieve the 1772 ruling that ensured slaves could not be forced back to colonies once they were in Britain.
      • He was motivated to join the abolition movement after befriending Jonathan Strong, a slave who had been badly treated by his owner and who was at risk of being sold back to slavery.
    • William WIlberforce
      • Raised the issue of the abolition of slavery in Parliament 18 times.
      • Faced much early opposition in Parliament.
    • Olaudah Equiano
      • An ex-slave who brought his own freedom
      • Told the horrors of slavery in his autobiography that was published in 1789
    • Acts of Abolition
      • The Slave Trade Abolition Act of 1807 banned the buying and selling of slaves.
      • The Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 abolished slavery completely in the British Empire.
    • Slavery and the American Civil War
      • The Northern and Southern states had been arguing about slavery for many years.
      • The Southern economy relied on slaves due to the cotton industry.
      • Abraham Lincoln had spoken out against slavery regularly. Tensions with the south heightened and the American Civil War broke out in 1861.
      • The Northern states formed the Union army and the southern states formed the Confederate army.
    • North vs South
      • North
        • Many black people wanted to fight for the Union army.
        • Black soldiers were kept separate from white soldiers and paid less.
        • The south did not like the fact that black soldiers were fighitng against them and murdered any that they captured.
      • South
        • Many black people fled the south to help the Union army.
        • Some defended plantations out of loyalty or fear of their masters.
      • The Union Army won the war and the 13th Amendment abolished slavery in 1865.
