  • Tests for Sulfate Ions
    • Add dilute HCL followed by Barium Chloride Solution.
    • WHITE precipitate of Barium sulfate means the original compound was a SULFATE.
  • Tests for Carbonates
    • Test to see if a gas is CO2 - bubbling the gas through limewater. If it is CO2, the limewater will turn CLOUDY.
    • Can use this test for Carbonate Ions, as they react with dilute acids to form CO2.
    • Acid + Carbonate --> Salt + Water + Carbon Dioxide.
