What are the two tests for positive ions?
Flame tests and testing with Sodium Hydroxide.
1 of 18
What are the three tests for negative ions?
Sulfate ions test, Halide ions test and Carbonate ions test.
2 of 18
Which five ions do flame tests test for?
Lithium, Sodium, Potasssium, Calcium and Barium Ions.
3 of 18
Which six ions does sodium hydroxide test for?
Copper, Iron (II), Iron (III), Calcium, Magnesium and Aluminium ions.
4 of 18
What do you do in the flame test?
Dip a splint into the sample and hold it in a bunsen flame to see a colour change.
5 of 18
In the flame test what colour will lithium ions make the flame?
Bright red
6 of 18
In the flame test what colour will sodum ions make the flame?
Yellow/Orange
7 of 18
In the flame test what colour will potassium ions make the flame?
Lilac
8 of 18
In the flame test what colour will calcium ions make the flame?
Brick red
9 of 18
In the flame test what colour will barium ions make the flame?
Green

How do you use Sodium Hydroxide to test for ions?
Put sample in a test tube and add sodium hydroxide solution to the test tube, then look for a precipitate.
11 of 18
What colour precipitate do Copper ions form when Sodium Hydroxide is added?
Blue precipitate
12 of 18
What colour precipitate do Iron (II) ions form when Sodium Hydroxide is added?
Green precipitate
13 of 18
What colour precipitate do Iron (III) ions form when Sodium Hydroxide is added?
Brown precipitate
14 of 18
What colour precipitate do Calcium ions form when Sodium Hydroxide is added?
White precipitate
15 of 18
What colour precipitate do Magnesium ions form when Sodium Hydroxide is added?
White precipitate
16 of 18
What colour precipitate do Aluminium ions form when Sodium Hydroxide is added?
White precipitate that redissolves in excess.
17 of 18
If you carry out the sodium hydroxide test and it forms a white precipitate how do you know whether there are Magnesium ions present or Calcium ions presnt?
You would then carry out the flame test, Calcium ions will turn the flame brick red and Magnesium ions will cause no colour change.
