  • TEEN FILM - CONTEXT
    • REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE
      • POST WAR - booming economy (leisure money, living in the suburbs)
        • baby booming- men returned from war so families were reunited, and they were more financially stable than the generations before.
          • BIRTH OF THE TEENAGER - The teenagers had spendable income and more free time, leading to their subculture which had not necessarily been available before.
            • THE HAYS CODE - society thought that any wrongdoing had to be punished: Jim is underage drinking, he gets arrested. Plato kills puppies, he gets killed himself.
              • no empathy for any sin
    • ELEPHANT
      • Based on the Columbine High School Massacre.
        • Links to the original Columbine Massacre
          • Similarities:Two loners, one has mental illness (he hears jungle noises in the shooting scene, sound overwhelms him in the cafeteria.) No one knows why they shot up the school.
          • Differences: Alex kills Eric, witness accounts of columbine described the boys as whooping and laughing, having fun, whereas in the film they are serious, walking with no laughter or excitement.
        • Despite advancements to feminism we have no strong female characters, which could be seen as Van Saint commenting on toxic masculinity. The girls are gossipy, quite shallow.
      • 9/11: America was nervous about attacks on the country, and this is a citizen's terror attack.
