        • 1 in 5 jobs lost and businesses destroyed
        • Government not able to run the country- US had to take over
        • Strong aftershocks - went on for 6 days. One was 6.1
        • homeless people moved into makeshift tents
        • Damaged roads- aid supplies could not get to the most vounrable
    • RESPONSES
      • short term
        • food and water sent over urgently
        • The US sent in 10,000 troops as Haiti was so chaotic
          • 100 million dollars of short term aid
        • Dominican republic offered their hospitals
      • Long term
        • many celebrities offered money
        • 5 years later people are still living in tents and struggling to survive with little aid
        • by 2012 only 5% of the rubble had been cleared and only 15% of homeless had been found new homes
        • 80,000 people still living in temporary accommodation
        • $4.5 billion promised to help rebuild Haiti
          • not all money was given as Haiti government could not be trusted to not steal the money
          • most money was wasted on less important matters than clean water and sanitation
            • wide spread diseases e.g cholera throughout Haiti
            • poorly built homes contributed to higher number of deaths
