- 1) Conserving the historic and natural environment
- historic environment can be conserved by keeping the outside of old historic buildings the same and renovating the insides
- the natural environment can be conserved by reducing/stopping development on edge of built up areas
- A SUSTAINABLE CITY: an urban area where residents have a way of life that will last a long time.
- Advantages of brownfield sites
- reduces commuting and traffic congestion
- prevents urban sprawl
- unsightly sights get cleaned up
- countryside isn't built on
- reduces waste/derelict land in cities
- 2) Disposal of waste
- to reduce waste, the government needs to reduce packaging in general
- Incineration
- only accounts for 99% of household waste disposal
- bad for the environment
- creates pollution
- you don't need masses of big sites
- a good use for disused quarries
- Landfill
- you need huge sites that take up space
- doesn't pollute
- not necessarily bad for the environment
- land can be re-used
- 3) Open spaces
- In London the distribution of open spaces is very well distributed
- The two main parks are Regent's park and Hyde park
- all of the parks are within walking distance of each other
- 4) Local people are involved in planning decisions
