  • SPECIALISED CELLS(cells that have a specific job/function)
    • ROOT HAIR CELLS
      • helps plants take up water and mineral ions more effieciently
      • increases the surface area for water to move into the cell
      • have a large, permanent vacuole which speed up the movement of water into the cell by osmosis from the soil across the cell
      • found near the tips of growing roots
    • CONE CELLS
      • help you see in colour
      • outer segment
        • contains a visual pigment that changes chemically in coloured light
          • needs energy to change back to its original form
            • mitochondria release the energy needed to reform the pigment
              • lets you see continually in colour
      • middle segment
        • packed full of mitochondria
          • mitochondria release the energy needed to reform the pigment
            • lets you see continually in colour
      • final segment
        • specialised synapse that connects to the optic nerve
          • when coloured light makes your visual pigment change, a nerve impulse is triggered
            • this makes its way along this optic nerve to the brain
    • SPERM CELLS
      • contain genetic information from the male parent
      • have a long tail that whips from side to side that helps them swim through water to reach the egg
      • middle section is full of mitochondria- provides energy for tail to work
      • acrosome stores digestive enzymes for breaking down the outer layers of the egg
      • nucleus contains the genetic information to be passed on
    • FAT CELLS
      • if you eat more food than you need, you body stores it in fat cells
      • they help animals, including humans, to survive when food is in short supply
      • they have a small amount of cytoplasm and large amounts of fats
      • they have few mitochondria as the cell needs very little energy
      • they can expand- a fat cell can expand up to 1000 times its original size as it fills up with fat
