  • Social Impacts
    • Uneven Food Distribution
      • Many basic food products are used to produce a smaller amount of more desirable goods e.g. meat
      • If there is little land poorer people may exploit it unsustainably so outputs decline and traded food reliance increases
      • Easier transportation means that LEDCs grow food to export it to MEDCs
        • Makes LEDCs less self-reliant on food and no increased money to pay for imported food
      • Cash crops less labour intensive = few job opportunities and more rural depopulation
    • Misuse of Land
      • Over exploitation of soil causes nutrient depletion and soil erosion
      • Pollution and salinisation can reduce production
      • In poor countries drops in food production can cause famine, abandonment and refugee movements
