- Social Psychology
- Majority influence
- Conformity = tendency to change our views to the influence of a larger group. Due to social pressure
- Three types of conformity:
- Compliance = agree publicly but no privately. Short-term change to be accepted by the group
- Identification = Moderate type. Agree publicly and MOSTLY privately. To be accepted by the group.
- Internalisation = Permanent and long lasting. Deepest level of conformity. Accept groups viewpoint publically and privately
- Research into conformity
- AIM = ASCH tested whether people would conform to group pressure even on an unambiguous task.
- PPTS = 123 American male undergraduates
- PROCEDURE= Shown a series of lines: 1 standard line and 3 comparison lines. 7males were seated infront of the board. 6/7 were confederates. The ppt was always sat 2nd to last. 12/18 trails, the confederates gave the incorrect answer.
- RESULTS = Mean conformity rate was 37%. 5% conformed on every trail. 25% remained completely independent
- CONCLUSION = wanted to avoid standing out from the crowd so showed compliance.
- Asch's variables affecting conformity
- Unanimitiy = The presence of a dissenter made confinity rates drop form 37% to 25%
- Group size = 3 confederates increased conformity rates to 32%
- Task Difficulty = more ambiguous the task (harder) the higher the conformity rates as ppts doubt their won ability so look to others for approval.
- Explanations for conformity
- Normative social influence = explains conformity to be accepted and gain approval and a desire to be liked. Usually involves public compliance.
- Informational social influence = explains conformity as being a result of people not knowing what to do in a situation. Look to others with more information. Desire to be liked and involves internalisation.
