- Social Learning Theory
- Assumptions
- much of our behaviour is learned from experience but different ways: observation and imitation
- Role of the Mediational Process
- mental factors involved in learning, four mental processes identified by Bandura
- Attention- extent we notice certain behavior
- Retention- how well the behavior is remembered
- Motor Reproduction- ability of observer to perform behavior
- Motivation- will to perform behavior, determined by if rewarded or punished
- Identification
- More likely to imitate behavior of people we identify with = role models. Called modelling. Role model- posses similar characteristics to observer and have high status may not be physically present- media important
- Vicarious Reinforcement
- observes behavior of others, imitation only occurs if behavior seen to be rewarded than punished. Observes consequences.
- Bobo Doll Experiment
- one group- video of adult being aggressive.
- Later observed playing with toys and BoBo dolls- much more aggressive
- Positives
- Comprehensive Explanation- classical and operant conditioning cant offer an adequate info but Bandura observed the importance of cognitive factors in motivational processes
- Explains Cultural Differences- learn from individuals around them, through media, cultural norms
- Less Determinist than Behaviourism- not just influenced by our environment but exert a force on it through behavior we choose- some free will
- Negatives
- Underestimates biological factors- BoBo dolls, boys more aggressive, hormone testosterone? Not accounted for
- Over-reliance on lab studies- young children in lab developed Banduras ideas. Demand Characteristics. BoBo dolls main purpose is to strike it ? Expected!
- Assumptions
