    • Reasons for Social Change
      • Population growth due to a natural rate of growth (rising birth rate and falling death rate), stimulated by better economic conditions
      • Large numbers of peasant families moved to towns/cities in search of industrial employment
      • Nobility declined by 1914 - mainly as a result of having to sell land to pay off debts
      • Communist ideology placed an emphasis on equality and gave a greater amount of authority and responsibility to workers
    • Population Growth
      • 1858 = 74 Million inhabitants of the Russian Empire
      • 1960 = 212 million inhabitants of the USSR
    • Social Structure
      • End of 1890s, Russian society still 80% population (agricultural)
      • The rise of the middle class was a significant development - by 1914 around 2 million fell into the middle-class bracket
      • Nobility = in decline. 1870s - Gentry owned 200 million acres of land. Fell to 140 million in 1914.
      • Under the communists, majority of society was made up of workers - after a while, status rankings appeared among these - 1930s - 1.5 million promotions of ordinary workers to managers.
    • The Provision of Education
      • The Tsars
        • A2 placed the administration of elementary education with the Zemstva
        • No. of Primary Schools rose 1880 - 1914 - 23,000 to 81,0000
        • A3 took away much of the autonomy of universities
      • The Communists
        • 1930 - primary school attendance made compulsory. By then 18 million children were attending primary schools
        • 1939 - Stalin scrapped school fees
