  • 4A.3A: Regional and national influences on Kelham Island
    • Regional
      • Sheffield being the 'steel city', this is still evident in the remaining industrial style buildings
      • 1985 granted Conservation status, means the area has retained some of the industrial heritage
      • Decision to turn the area into a residential one, meaning there is now a strong sense of community there
        • Developers taking advantage of cheap land
          • E.g. company 'Citu' developing Little Kelham
      • Increasingly connected to Sheffield via A61 and more bus routes for access, also there is free parking to encourage visitors
      • Decisions of individual businesses (e.g. Fat Cat pub) to raise prices, making their customers more middle-class than working-class
      • Proximity to city centre + Don made it attractive for private investors
      • The Kelham Island and Neepsend Action Plan, published in 2008 by Sheffield Council, set out Kelham Island as an attractive location for private investment.
    • National
      • Impact of the global shift and globalisation meaning a decline in manufacturing and the opening of tertiary sector businesses
      • Influence of the National Regeneration Agencies, provided grants to private developers such as Gleeson's to stimulate development (Gleeson's received 1/4 of its total costs to develop from this body)
      • In the future the Tory government's 'Level Up' policy may make a huge difference
