    • Kulaks ("fists") bought extra land for surplus grain
      • Others sold up land to gain a passport to leave the mir
        • 1913- 2.4 million workers in large scale indutry
      • In 1878, only 50% of peasants were producing a surplus

      • Bezdna- 70 peasant deaths
    • Some landowners used compensation to get out of debt, others invested in cities

    • Restricted peasants' movements. They were running away during Muscovite expansion searching for better pay
      • Made it easier to tax them (through the mir)
    • Economy grew 5% in the following year
