    • Similarities and Differences
      • Churches and Sects claim their interpretation is the only legitimate one. Denominations and Cults accept that there can be many interpretations.  Churches and Denominations are seen as respectable and legitimate whereas Cults and Sects are seen as deviant.
    • Examples Churches: Catholic churches, mosques, temples Sects: Children of God, the Moonies Denominations: Methodism Cults: Scientology, Palmistry
    • Bruce argues that Troeltsch's idea of churches having a religious monopoly, only applies to the Catholic Church before the Protestant Reformation. However sects and cults have flourished and religious diversity has become the norm.
    • In today's society, churches have lost their monopoly of truth and have become denominations, competing with the rest.
