    • The Mai Lai Massacre
      • One of the most horrific incidents of violence committed against unarmed civilians during the Veitnam war
      • More than 500 people were slaughtered in the Mai Lai massacre, including young girls and women who were ***** and mutilated before being killed
      • U.S. Lieutenant Calley commanded a platoon of a division named Charlie company. In March, th platoon had encountered heavy fire arms resulting in many soldiers being killed or injured
      • The members were of course on edge as they entered the village of My Lai which was a suspected hide out for Vietnam soldiers. The platoon didn't find soldiers, but instead found hundreds of unarmed civilians
      • As a result of Calley's orders, the soldiers of Charlies Company began firing randomly at the villagers, none of who intended to combat or initiated it
      • They killed both men and women of all ages, even children. Some were made to go in to a ditch and were mowed down with a machine gun
      • When all was said and done, there was about 500 murdered unarmed civilians their age ranging from 1-82
      • Lieutennant Calley said: 'I was ordered to go in there and destroy the enemy. That was my job that day. That was the mission i was given. I did not sit down and think in terms of men, women and children. They were all classed as the same
      • Calley was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in military prison, but President Richard Nixon intervened and Calley eventually served just three and a half years under house arrest
    • Abu Gharib
      • In 2004, accounts of physical, psychological and sexual abuse were made against the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq
      • These acts were commited by military police personnal of the U.S Army many later who just said they were following orders
      • Lynndie England was seen worldwide in photographs the showed that showed her smiling and pointing at naked prisoners. In one, of the photos, she was seen holding a leash that encircled the neck of a naked Iraq man. She repeatedly insisted that her actions were dictated by a 'persons in my higher command'
      • 'I was instructed by persons in a higher rank to stand there and hold this leash and look at the camera,' she said. 'We thought that's how they did it,' England said. 'We're not trained as MI or CIA--mind games, intimidation, it sounded pretty typical to us
      • England said that she doesn't regret how the prisoners were treated
      • She said the actions were depicted in the photos were intended to put psychological pressure on the Iraq prisoners
      • 'I mean to us, we were doing our job, which we were doing as we were told, and the outcome was what we wanted
