- 3 TYPES OF RADIATION
- ALPHA
- Helium Nucleus consisting of 2 protons and 2 neutrons
- Relative Charge of +2
- High mass compared to beta particles
- Speed up to 0.1 times the speed of light
- STRONG IONISING EFFECT
- Not very penetrating, can be stopped by paper, skin, few cm of air
- Deflected by magnetic and electric fields
- BETA
- Each particle is an electron
- Relative charge of -1
- Low mass compared with Alpha particles
- Speed of us to 0.9 times the speed of light
- Weak ionising effect
- Penetrating but stopped by a few mm of aluminium or any other suitable metal
- Deflected by magnetic and electric fields
- Each particle is an electron
- GAMMA
- NOT particles but rather electromagntic waves
- NO charge
- NO mass
- Travels at the speed of light
- VERY WEAK ionising effect
- VERY STRONGLY penetrating- intensity reduced by lead and thick concrete
- NEVER completely stopped
- Deflected by magnetic and electric fields
- ALPHA
