  • Radical Feminism
    • Radical feminists regard patriarchy as the most fundamental form of inequality
      • They believe the world is divided into two 'sex classes' of men and women
        • Men dominate all areas of society and are seen as 'the enemy' who oppress women through violence, fear etc and turn women into sex objects for their own pleasure
    • Radical feminists propose destruction of the patriarchy and women should free themselves from male oppression by:
      • Living their lives separately from men (living apart)
      • Consciousness raising (reclaiming their power through sharing experiences)
      • Political lesbianism (avoiding straight relationships)
    • Evaluation
      • Strengths
        • Lots of evidence to support the radical idea of the patriarchy e:g the majority of CEOs being male
      • Weaknesses
        • 'Political lesbianism' wouldn't work due to heterosexual attraction so women would not avoid straight relationships
    • How women are dominated, controlled, oppressed etc:
      • 'Triple shift' (Duncombe and Marsden 1993)
      • Glass ceiling (Heidensohn 1996)
      • Housework and childcare responsibilities (Oakley 1974)
