- Radical Feminism
- Radical feminists regard patriarchy as the most fundamental form of inequality
- They believe the world is divided into two 'sex classes' of men and women
- Men dominate all areas of society and are seen as 'the enemy' who oppress women through violence, fear etc and turn women into sex objects for their own pleasure
- They believe the world is divided into two 'sex classes' of men and women
- Radical feminists propose destruction of the patriarchy and women should free themselves from male oppression by:
- Living their lives separately from men (living apart)
- Consciousness raising (reclaiming their power through sharing experiences)
- Political lesbianism (avoiding straight relationships)
- Evaluation
- Strengths
- Lots of evidence to support the radical idea of the patriarchy e:g the majority of CEOs being male
- Weaknesses
- 'Political lesbianism' wouldn't work due to heterosexual attraction so women would not avoid straight relationships
- Strengths
- How women are dominated, controlled, oppressed etc:
- 'Triple shift' (Duncombe and Marsden 1993)
- Glass ceiling (Heidensohn 1996)
- Housework and childcare responsibilities (Oakley 1974)
- Radical feminists regard patriarchy as the most fundamental form of inequality
