  • Prejudice
    • Major theme in 'Of mice and Men'
      • Crooks and candy are the characters who have to put up with the most prejudice on the ranch
        • Because Crooks is black, Candy is old and disabled
    • Means having a negative opinion of someone because of things like their age or race
    • People get judged based on things instead of what they're actually like
    • People are often treated badly because others are prejudiced against them
    • A lot of prejudice in America in 1930's
      • Black people were separated from white people in schools, prisons and hospitals
      • Farm work was very physical + you needed to be fit to do it
      • It was really hard to get a job if you were old or disabled
      • Women also experienced prejudice
    • Crooks is treated badly because of his race
      • Crooks lives separately, he's ignored and picked on by the other workers
      • Picked on by the boss all the time - always giving crooks 'hell'
        • Easy target because he's black
      • Likes idea of  the dream farm because he believes he'll be treated like an equal there
        • He's first one to realise that dream isn't possible
          • Used to dissapointment
      • KEY QUOTE: Crooks: "If i say something, why it's just a ****** sayin' it"
    • Candy is treated badly because of his age and disability
      • He is old and knows it won't be long before they 'can' (fire) him from his job
      • His feelings don't seem to be very important to the men on the ranch.
        • He doesn't get much sympathy when Carlson wants to shoot his old dog
      • KEY QUOTE: Candy: "I ain't much good with on'y one hand"
