- right, similar to ZP, original part of Catholic Church, moderate
- Aims- open to all Christians, pro working with West and forming EEC, dominating
- Free Democratic Party (FDP)
- similar to DVP, supported by middle classes, moderate right
- Aims- merged of 9 regional liberal parties, held balance of power in Bundestag for most of FRG existence
- German Socialist Party (SPD)
- similar to SPD, moderate left wing, supported by workers and middle class
- Aims- used to be harder left, didn't support free market, wanted reunification over EEC
- changed to middle class reformist after 1959 Godesberg Programme away from Marxism
- German Communist Party (KPD)
- revived after war, supported by workers, communist
- collapsed with establishment of communist in East due to suspicion
- new DPK formed after ban on KPD from 1969
- Green (Die Grunen)
- left, against nuclear weapons, campaigned on environmental issues and nationwide peace
- internal conflict from realists wanting SPD coalition and fundamentalists rejecting it
- Christian Democratic Union (CDU)
