- Assigned to conditions by flipping a coin or taking a name out a hat ( by chance)
- Counterbalancing
- The order of the condition are alternated for each participant (not always fresh for 'A' and tired for 'B'
- Order affects
- If participants do one experiment first, it may have an effect n the second condition (them knowing more about the experiment)
- Matched pairs
- Each condition uses different participants but they are matched in terms of characteristics
- Repeated
- The same group of participants take part in each condition of the study. Each condition includes the same participants
- Independant
- Different participants take part in each condition of the study. Each condition of the study includes a different group of participants
