  • Parenting styles (studied by Baumrind) : identifiable patterns of parental caretaking and interaction with children
    • authoritarian: enforce rigid rules and demand strict obedience to authority - view children as having few rights but adult like responsibilities- child must accept without question
      • children are obedient and self controlled BUT emotionally stiff, withdrawn, apprehensive and lacking in curiosity
    • overly permissive: give little guidance, allow too much freedom and dont hold children accountable for their actions - child has rights like an adult but few responsibilities
      • children are dependent, immature and misbehave , aimless
    • authoritative parents: supply firm and consistent guidance combined with love and affection - encourage responsible behavior
