  • Parent- infant attachment- Evaluation
    • Inconsistent findings on the father
      • Different researchers are interested in different research questions. On one hand, some psychologists are interested in understanding the role of the father as secondary attachment figures because they have  tendency to see fathers behaving differently from mothers and having a distinct role
      • Where as others are more concerned with the fathers as primary attachment figures and are interested if the fathers can take on a maternal role
      • This is a weakness because it means psychologists cant answer simple questions such as 'What is the role of the father?'
    • If the fathers have a distinct role why aren't children without fathers different?
      • Grossman (2002) found that fathers as secondary attachment figures had an important role in their children's development
      • But, other studys show that children grow up in same sex families dont develop any differently than in a two parent heterosexual family (MacCallum and Gloombok 2004)
      • Suggesting that the fathers role as a secondary attachment figure isnt important
    • Why dont father generally become primary attachments
      • The fact that fathers tend not to become the primary attachment figure could simply be the result of gender roles, in which women are more caring and nurturing than men
        • Therefore fathers simply don't feel like they should act like that
      • On the other hand, it could be that female hormones (oestrogen) create higher levels of nurturing therefore women are more biologically pre-disposed to be the primary attachment figure
