  • Pre-phallic children - theory sees children pass through 5 psycho sexual stages.
    • Begins with oral stage, ends with genital.
      • The phallic stage is where gender development occurs and is the THIRD stage.
        • Occurs around ages of 3 and 6. Children have no concept of gender identity prior to this stage.
    • In the phallic stage, the focus of pleasure for the child switches to the genitals and in this stage they experience OC or EC
      • These stages are curcial in the formation of gender identity.
  • Freud believes that children of both sexes identify with the same sex parent as a means of resolving their complexes.
    • Involving children to take on board gender identity of the same sex parent - INTERNALISATION.
