  • Organelles Working Together
    • Organelles are involved in protein production
      • 1) Proteins are made in the ribosomes
        • 2) The ribosomes on the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum make proteins  that are excreted or attached to the cell membrane
          • 3) New proteins made at the RER are folded and processed in RER (e.g. new sugar chains are added)
            • 4) They are then transported to the golgi apparatus in vesicles
              • 5) At the golgi apparatus the proteins are further processed (sugar chains are trimmed or new sugar chains are added)
                • 6) The proteins enter more vesicles to be transported around the cells
                  • Glycoproteinsfound in mucus move to the cell surface where they are secreted
        • 2) Proteins made in the free ribosomes in the cytoplasm stay in the cytoplasm
          • 3) New proteins made at the RER are folded and processed in RER (e.g. new sugar chains are added)
            • 4) They are then transported to the golgi apparatus in vesicles
              • 5) At the golgi apparatus the proteins are further processed (sugar chains are trimmed or new sugar chains are added)
                • 6) The proteins enter more vesicles to be transported around the cells
                  • Glycoproteinsfound in mucus move to the cell surface where they are secreted
    • The Cytoskeleton has Several Functions
      • The organelles in  a cell are surrounded by cytoplasm
        • Cytoplasm contains a network of protein threads called the cytoskeleton
          • Made of two things
            • Microtubules
              • Untitled
            • Microfilaments
              • Small solid protein strands
