  • alcohol
    • ethanol
      • affects nervous system and makes reflexes and thought processes slower
      • absorbed from the gut into the bloodstream  where it passes into all the body's tissues including the brain
      • small doeses= cheerful, reduces inhibitions
      • large doses = irrational decisions, lack of self control + judgment
      • if the dose it too high it can lead to unconsciousness, a coma or even death
    • brain
      • long term heavy use of alcohol can cause damage to the brain
      • it can cause the brain to become soft and pulpy and lose its structure so it cannot function
        • can lead to death
    • liver
      • they may develop cirrhosis of the liver
        • liver tissue is destroyed and active cells are replayed with scar tissue
          • scar tissue cannot carry out the vital functions of the liver
      • they have a higher chance of developing liver cancer
        • this spreads rapidly and is hard to treat
    • pregnancy
      • fetal alcohol syndrome
        • problems with
          • hearing, jaw, teeth
          • kidney, liver, heart
          • learning, developmental problems
      • alcohol passes to the baby through the placenta
        • their developing livers cannot cope with it
        • causes damage to the brain and body, especially in the early stages
