      • To achive salvation members must make a sharp break from their former life
      • Members live communally, restricted contact with outside world
      • Have conservative moral codes
    • World-accommodating NRMs
      • Often breakaways from existing mainstream churches or denominations
      • Neither accept or reject the world
      • Focus on religious rather than worldly matters
      • Members tend to live conventional lives
    • World-affirming NRMs
      • Lack some of the conventional features of religion
      • Offer their followers access to spiritual or supernatural powers
      • Accept the world as it is
      • Promise followers success in terms of mainstream goals & values
      • Tolerant of other religions
      • Followers are often customers rather than members
      • Place few demands on members
