    • USSR signed treaty with Fr 1935 against Hitler
      • Fr would help USSR if Ger invaded USSR

    • 24th August 1939
      • Hitler and Stalin signed, agreed not to attack one another, privately split Pol between them
        • Agreed that if Ger invaded Pol, USSR would get Latvia, Estonia, Finland and East Poland but Hitler never really intended to let them keep those areas
    • Why did Stalin sign it?
      • Br and Fr not strong enough as allies against Hitler
      • Wanted Eastern Poland and to take over Baltic states
      • Didn't believe Hitler would keep his word - hoped to build up forces for attack he knew would come
