    • WW1 and WW2 - conscription used
      • 1916: conscription for unmarried men aged 18-24 introduced
      • 1918: Conscription for WW1 abolished
      • 1939: National Service act introduces conscription again
      • 1941: Conscription used for women aged 20 - 30, later aged 20 - 51
      • 1960: Return to permanent, volunteer standing army
    • Government propaganda encouraging people to enlist
    • PALs battalions - volunteers from the same community
    • National Service: all men 17-12 had to complete 18 months training and service, followed by 4 years in the reserves
