- Lee's study into Lying and Truth- Telling(1997)
- AIM- To compare cross-cultural evaluations of lying and truth telling in situations involving prosaical and antisocial behaviour.
- METHOD- Cross cultural study using a cross sectional design.
- SAMPLE-120 Chinese and 108 Canadian children aged 7,9,11.
- Children were randomly assigned to either the condition of physical stories or social stories.
- The stories were either prosaical or antisocial and contained either truth telling or lying .
- The stories were read to the participants and they were then asked to rate the stories on a scale of how 'good' or 'naughty' the story character was.
- The stories were read in their own language and the rating scale was systematically changed to ensure the child wasn't always picking the same one.
- RESULTS- Both cultures rated truth telling in antisocial behaviours very positively and also gave similar ratings to lie telling in antisocial situations.
- Chinese children rated truth telling in prosaical situations less positively and lie telling more positively in prosaical situations than the Canadian children did.
- This difference became greater with age and the comments off the Chinese children reflected their beliefs about being modest at ones good deeds and qualities.
- Chinese children rated truth telling in prosaical situations less positively and lie telling more positively in prosaical situations than the Canadian children did.
