What was the Background to Lee et al's study of Evaluation of lying and truth telling?
Piaget said that children under the age of 11 rely on two factor when making moral judgements about lying 1. how big the lie was and 2. whether it was punished. Wimmer goes against piaget saying that children of all ages make similar judgments.

What was the aim of the study?
To investigate cross cultural differences in children's understanding and moral valuations of lying. The study aimed to compare responses of Chinese an Canadian ps to stories that involves lying and truth telling.

What was the research method?
Cross cultural method. Researchers conducted the test on each of the group and of ps then compared their responses. Cross sectional.

Who were the participants?
120 Chinese Children and 108 Canadian Children, aged 7, 9 and 11 years. The Chinese children were from elementary schools in Hangzhou. The Canadian children were from middle class families, elementary schools around Fredericton.

What was the design?
From each cultural group, half the participants were randomly assigned to a social story condition and the other to a physical story condition. The social stories involved the action of the main child affecting other people, physical only objects.

What sort of stories were read aloud to the ps?
They were written to be familiar with both cultures. Two of the stories were 'pro social' and involved a child unintentionally carrying out a good deed. The other two were 'antisocial' which involved a child carrying out a bad deed.

What were the characters asked at the end of the story?
The child characeter was asked by a teacher who had carried out the deed. In two stories the child lied and in the other two the child told the truth.

What were the children shown before the stories?
A 7 point rating chart which contained the following ratings; very very good (three red stars) very good, good, neither(blue circle), naughty (black cross), very naughty, very very naughty.

How were the stories read aloud?
In their own language using illustrations

What were the children asked after the deed part of the story and what did they have to do?
'was what he (or she) did good or naughty?' The child could respond verbally, none verbally or both using the rating scale. The question was repeated at the end of the story (after lie or truth telling).

Results- What were the similarities?
There were similarities in their negative ratings of lying in anti social situations, and their positive ratings of truth telling in those stories.

Results- what were the differences?
Evaluations of truth telling and lying in pro social situations . Overall Chinese children tended to rate truth telling less positively than the Canadian Children.

Results- How did the Chinese rate lying in pro social situations?
Significantly more positive that the Canadian Children. 70% of chinese 11 year olds rate lying positively in pro social situations, compared to 25% of Chinese 7 year olds.

Results- What did Lee et al, say this was because?
Chinese children are taught the values of self-effacement and modesty, and that this has an increasing impact on their moral reasoning at this age.

What were the conclusions of this study?
1.Moral reasoning can be influenced by our culture and society. 2. The influence of socio-economic cultural factors becomes stronger as we age. 3. Some aspects of moral reasoning, may be universal.
