- Imposter syndrome
- Imposter syndrome
- Feeling that you are an 'imposter' who doesn't belong in a certain community/job/role and only got there by luck and will be exposed or 'found out' at any moment
- Imposter syndrome is very common, but especially among the members of marginalised or negatively stereotyped groups
- It involves a constant feeling of anxiety and vulnerability to the threat of sudden exposure
- It undermines your performance so can become a 'self-fulfilling prophecy'
- It manifests in a feeling that your achievements must be due to good luck rather than ability or hard work
- It tends to get worse the more successful you are
- Any "external success heightens rather than soothes the effects" (Fiona Buckland)
- What to do about imposter syndrome
- Be aware your self-evaluation is probably corrupted by imposter syndrome
- "I'm rubbish at this and everyone will find out"
- Be guided by evidence of your abilities as well as your self-assessments
- "I'm terrified, even though I got a 68 in the last essay so can obviously do it..."
- Be open about your uncertainties and anxieties
- Imposter syndrome starts to lose force once you realise almost everyone feels like that
- (If you don't experience it) Be honest about your own failures, setbacks, shortingcomings
- Be aware your self-evaluation is probably corrupted by imposter syndrome
