Pascal's wager

Advantages

  • Shows why we should believe in God
  • Displays how we are at no loss if we decide to believe
  • If we believe, we get to gain the benefits
  • Warns of the possibility of hell if one chooses not to believe
  • Shows how one can act accordingly if they do decide to believe e.g. going to church etc

Disadvantages

  • Does not prove existence of God
  • Does not regard other gods e.g. 'Allah';
  • Seems implausible because of these
  • God will know if we're believing just as insurance

Evaluation

Pascal's wager does show why we should believe in God, however the clarity of which God we should believe is lacking. Furthermore, an atheistic argument could go: if there is no God, the wager is implausible, there is no God, the wager is implausible.
