  • Humanist perspective - Maslow's Hierarchy of needs
    • As human beings we all have needs that need to be fulfilled in order to feel happy and content.
    • Five stages
      • 1. physical needs: food, water, warmth, rest. these are the basic needs
        • 2. Safety needs: security, safety. these are the psychological needs
          • 3. Belonging and love needs: friendships, intimate relationships, love
            • 4. Self esteem needs: feeling of accomplishment, prestige
              • 5. Self actualization: achieving ones full potential, creative activities
    • A child who is hungry cannot learn, a child who is stressed cannot learn, a child who is in an environment absent of unconditioned love cannot learn
    • If a child cannot sleep, they cannot concentrate meaning they cannot learn.
