- Human Imperfection
- Humans are considered psychologically limited and dependent as we fear isolation and instability
- Conservatives emphasise the importance of a social order as it ensures that life is stable and predictable
- Immoral behaviour is rooted in the individual as humans are innately selfish.
- Hobbes- 'Power after Power'
- The only effective deterrent from these instincts is for law backed up by the knowledge that it will be enforced - Paternalism
- Therefore the role of law is not to uphold liberty but to preserve order
- Mankind's capacity for rationalism are limited (Oakeshott) as humans are motivated by primary urges
- Conservatives are suspicious of any ideology which sees human nature as fixed and thus predictable
