- Louis in control
- Regency governments in other countries had failed, for example in the German empire and Sicily
- Henry was only nine and England was under a regency government. There was therefore, plenty of time for unrest and baronial rivalry before Henry was old enough to take over.
- Louis supporters and rebel barons held South East England. (London, Porchester and Southampton)
- Castles under Louis control included Guildford, Farnham and Winchester- a secure base.
- The French expected a quick victory.
- Barons supported Louis and they could claim popular support by saying they were fighting to uphold Magna Carta
- Avenging the disinherited Normans who had lost their English lands after the French invaded Normandy in 1204
