  • How far did British Society change between 1939-1975
    • Life During WW2 and the effects it had on peoples opinions after the war which led to the creation of the NHS
      • EVACUATION:During world war 2 many children had to be evacuated from the cities to the countryside to ensure their safety. Not only children were evacuated people like teachers, the elderly, pregnant women etc. 1,250,000 people were evacuated
        • Evacuation caused the mixing of different social class of children e.g those in poverty to middle class children and this caused many middle classed people in the countryside to be shocked about the children health as the children in the cities were in the cities were in a horrible state
          • This led to the WOMEN'S INSTITUTE compile a report on the health of the evacuees from the cities as many of them were not accustomed baths or running  water and did not change their clothes regularly therefore they were in infested with lice and had skin diseases like impetigo
            • this meant that there was huge expectation that something should be done after the war to improve the poverty  in cities and to help the people struck by poverty. This was important as it led to the creation of the NHS
      • 1945 ELECTION:    a general election was held where Churchill lost. As many people wanted change and not to be reminded about the war
        • VIEWS ON LABOUR PARTY :          after the general election the labour party came to power. they said that the government needed to do more to tackle poverty, illness, poor education. The people agreed with this and believed that it was time for change and the labour party promised change especially to improve the welfare state
          • THE BEVERIDGE REPORT IN         1942:            Was a report by sir beveridge on what should be done after the war. it identified the 5 giants that the people need to be protected from e.g WANT, DISEASE ,IDLENESS, SQUALOR (POVERTY), IGNORANCE. The report stated that to defeat these evils there should be full employment for everyone , child allowances and a  free national health service
            • everyone should pay for the welfare state so eveyone recieved the same support back. this meant it would help tackle poverty          etc             HOWEVER: many rich people were against it as a large sum of their money woudl go towards the new wellfrae state
              • During the war winston churchil was skeptical about the report and the plans it proposed evethough it was well received by the people. therefore he stated that the people should wait till after the war and see if there's money left over for the new programme    HOWEVER : many disagreed because the people wanted change quick and the labour party proposed that in 1945 election which they won
    • NHS AND ITS IMPACT:
      • NHS Introduced on 5 July 1948.
        • Overall the NHS improved the welfare of peoples lives
      • The British pubic warmly received the availability of free medical and dental care and demand exceeded all expectations.
      • Between 1943-72 no. of doctors doubled
        • NHS provided free child vacinations which menat less children died from common diseases
        • NHS provided free health, dental, maternity careand infant mortality rats fell from 60,000 deaths in 1945 to 20,00 deaths in 1975
