      • By 1999
        • Visitor numbers dropped from 17 to 11 million
        • 1000 hotels closed
        • 300 holiday flats closed
    • 4. Tourism in an extreme environment - Antarctica
      • Tourism is focused on Antarctic Peninsular
      • In the late 90's 5000 visitors visited Antarctica and in 2015 100,000 visited annually

        • No ships can carry more than 500

      • Cruise ships can carry up to 1000 passengers

        • Tourism now major part of economy. Visitor numbers are steady

        • Resort becomes unfashionable and visitor numbers start to decline

        • Visitors prefer other resorts
      • 6. Rejuvination
        • Attempts are made to modernise the resort

      • Local people have low paid jobs
