- The West and its Climate
- Central North America is dominated by the Great Plains
- The Plains are mostly a huge, flat, expanse of grassland
- The 'Low Plains'- to the East, with long grass
- L for Low and Long
- The 'High Pllains'- to the West with short grass
- The 'Low Plains'- to the East, with long grass
- The Weather on the Plains is Extreme and Scary
- The weather varies- can make farming hard
- The mountainson either side of the Plains produce rain shadows (regions with little rain)
- Droughts in summer, servere snow in winter
- Being so far from the sea means there's a huge difference in temp between summer and winter
- Tornadoes are common,
- These extremes are described as a continental climate
- The Rocky Mountains form a barrier across America
- The slopes on either side of the Rockies are heavily wooded-especially in the South
- Towards the centre of the Rockies is the Plateaux region.
- Flat and contains areas of desert
- Water can run onto the Plateaux region and get trapped, only escaping by evaporation
- This has lead to Great Salt Lake
- The Pacific Coast lands are milder and fertile
- West beyond the Sierra Nevada mountains lie the Pacific coast lands
- Land is mainly fertile. It has a temp climate because it's close to the sea
- This region was a much sought-after place to live. It still is, despite the earthquake risk
- 'Sought-after'- generally desired
