      • Freud was happy/ cheerful until he got "ill" and then his thoughts and words mismatched
      • Hans' father referred him to Freud to be psycho-analysed
      • Hans' family were big supporters of Freud and Hans' mother had been treated by him
      • Freud used Hans to support his theory of the Oedipus complex
    • Research method
      • Longitudinal case study gathered on one person (Hans) from ages 3-5
      • Hans' father sent records of events/ conversations to Freud who interpreted them and gave advice
    • Sample
      • Hans was 5 years old at the time of the study but data was gathered from when he was 3
      • The family were from Austria
    • Procedure
      • At age 3, Hans was interested in his/others "widdlers"
      • When masturbating, his mother would threaten to send "Doctor A to cut it off"
      • When Hans was 3.5, Hanna was born and he wished his mother would drown her in the bath
      • Hans had a phobia of being bitten by white horses (then cars and buses), as he saw one fall down and kick it's legs, and overheard a little girl being told to be careful as it may bite her
      • He had a giraffe, plumber and parenting fantasies
    • Results
      • Hans' fear of the horses came from a fear of his father (blinkers and dark mouth)
      • All results linked to experiencing the Oedipus complex
      • Hans' giraffe fantasy came from wanting to take his mother away from his father and have her himself
      • The plumber fanatasy was the final one and the resolution of the Oedipus complex (he identified with his father)
    • Conclusions
      • Hans' supported the theory of infantile sexuality
      • Hans' supported the theory of the Oedipus complex in the phallic stage
      • Hans' supported the theory of phobias being unconscious anxiety disaplced onto other objects
      • Hans' supported the theory that people are not aware of what is driving their behaviour
      • Hans' supported the theory of psycho-analysis working to resolve these phobias
