- Freud
- Theory
- Children are born with infantile sexuality
- The sequence of psychosexual development is determined by nature/nurture
- Stages of psychosexual development are: oral stage (0–1), anal stage (1-3), phallic stage (3-6), latency stage (6-puberty), genital stage (puberty-maturity)
- Oedipus/ Electra complex form in the phallic stage
- Background
- Freud was happy/ cheerful until he got "ill" and then his thoughts and words mismatched
- Hans' father referred him to Freud to be psycho-analysed
- Hans' family were big supporters of Freud and Hans' mother had been treated by him
- Freud used Hans to support his theory of the Oedipus complex
- Research method
- Longitudinal case study gathered on one person (Hans) from ages 3-5
- Hans' father sent records of events/ conversations to Freud who interpreted them and gave advice
- Sample
- Hans was 5 years old at the time of the study but data was gathered from when he was 3
- The family were from Austria
- Procedure
- At age 3, Hans was interested in his/others "widdlers"
- When masturbating, his mother would threaten to send "Doctor A to cut it off"
- When Hans was 3.5, Hanna was born and he wished his mother would drown her in the bath
- Hans had a phobia of being bitten by white horses (then cars and buses), as he saw one fall down and kick it's legs, and overheard a little girl being told to be careful as it may bite her
- He had a giraffe, plumber and parenting fantasies
- Results
- Hans' fear of the horses came from a fear of his father (blinkers and dark mouth)
- All results linked to experiencing the Oedipus complex
- Hans' giraffe fantasy came from wanting to take his mother away from his father and have her himself
- The plumber fanatasy was the final one and the resolution of the Oedipus complex (he identified with his father)
- Conclusions
- Hans' supported the theory of infantile sexuality
- Hans' supported the theory of the Oedipus complex in the phallic stage
- Hans' supported the theory of phobias being unconscious anxiety disaplced onto other objects
- Hans' supported the theory that people are not aware of what is driving their behaviour
- Hans' supported the theory of psycho-analysis working to resolve these phobias
